SUMMARY:2022 AGO Staff-Only Training
DESCRIPTION:September 20 – 23\, 2022\nChicago\, Illinois \nThis training is a closed session for attorneys general and attorney general staff only. \nNAGTRI National Anatomy of a Complex Consumer Case Training\nThis program is hosted by the Center for Consumer Protection. \nThis intensive three and one-half day program is intended to enhance the participants’ knowledge and skills in a constructive and positive learning environment facilitated by experienced attorneys serving as faculty. The program’s primary goal is to afford participants the opportunity to gain an understanding of and overcome the challenges when enforcing consumer protection laws. Although this training discusses civil litigation issues\, it is NOT a trial advocacy course in the strict sense of the term. Rather\, it is designed to expose the participants to the wide and varied issues they will encounter when working on complex consumer protection investigations\, settlements\, and lawsuits. \nThe program will contain a balance of topical presentations and skills sessions on various aspects of consumer protection investigations and enforcement actions. The emphasis in both the presentations and skills sessions will be to build upon the knowledge and skills participants have\, take what they learn and apply it in the context of such cases\, and to finish the program with a better understanding of how to effectively and professionally enforce consumer protection laws. \nFaculty-led presentations will cover many topics including the beginnings of a complex case; investigations and pre-litigation discovery; victims and witnesses; common ethical issues in consumer protection matters; pretrial motions; depositions; multistate cases; negotiations; dealing with the defense; calculating civil penalties and other forms of relief; and a real-life case study. There will also be skills sessions regarding pre-trial investigations\, depositions\, negotiations\, and civil penalties/other relief utilizing a case study developed specifically for the training. \nScholarship Nominations\nNominations will be due by Friday\, August 12\, 2022. \nNAGTRI will provide a limited number of scholarships to attorney general staff to attend the training. Each office will be allowed to nominate up to three possible individuals\, however space is limited and a scholarship is not guaranteed. \nThe training will begin the morning of Tuesday\, September 20\, with registration and breakfast at 8:00 a.m. and end at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Friday\, September 23. \nContact your nominator: If you are interested in attending this conference\, click the button below and follow the instructions to contact your office’s NAAG Nominator and submit your interest. \nExpress Your Interest \nPlease contact Amy Jackson at ajackson@naag.org if you have any questions. \nCLE Credit\nNAGTRI will apply for CLE for attendees eligible under CLE accrediting body guidelines.

This training will also address the substance use treatment landscape\, common types of civil and criminal fraud\, and the lived experiences of persons impacted by these problematic practices. Participants will hear from speakers of various backgrounds that are tackling this issue\, including peers within attorney general offices and local prosecutors\, the legal research community\, medical and public health experts\, and the patient advocacy community. This problem persists across various legal fields including Medicaid and insurance fraud\, consumer protection\, and even human trafficking. \nFor additional information\, please find part one and part two on NAGTRI Online. The first session\, hosted on November 4\, 2021\, addressed foundational concepts regarding substance use disorders\, the treatment landscape\, and relevant policy and legal considerations. Participants also heard from a person with lived experience in navigating substance use treatment for themselves including unethical\, predatory\, and fraudulent practices. The second session\, hosted on January 11\, 2022\, addressed the investigation\, prosecution\, and monitoring of predatory and unethical practices in substance use treatment in greater depth. This training included an overview of how other state agencies may address these issues\, including in collaboration with the attorney general community as well as an account from those with lived experience in substance use treatment on how the treatment landscape may differ for certain communities. \nThese trainings are made possible with support from Arnold Ventures. \nScholarship Nominations\nNominations will be due by Friday\, March 25\, 2022. \nThe conference will take place on Tuesday\, May 3\, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. ET and Wednesday\, May 4\, 2022\, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. ET. \nThis training is a closed session open to attorney general staff only. \nNAGTRI is pleased to offer space for additional participants per jurisdiction to attend this seminar. However\, NAAG would like for you to determine your personal comfort level and\, therefore please note that throughout the in-person training\, there will be group meals and training activities where participants will need to work closely with their peers. Distancing is possible\, but\, if you feel uncomfortable about being around other attendees during meals and discussions\, it will be challenging for you to engage in the training in-person. Participants may eat in their hotel rooms individually if preferred\, but this would impede your ability to engage closely with other attendees for interactive sessions and discussions. SUMMARY:NAGTRI National Training
DESCRIPTION:February 23-24\, 2022\nWashington\, D.C.  \nThis training is a closed session for attorneys general and attorney general staff only. \nServing the Public Workshop: Building Diversity and Inclusivity in an Attorney General’s Office\nHyatt Regency on Capitol Hill\nWashington\, D.C.\nHosted by the NAGTRI Center for Leadership Development  \nThis workshop will provide a safe and sensitive space to converse about subjects that can sometimes be difficult to understand or discuss\, like diversity\, equity\, and inclusion—terms that are more frequently appearing in our workplaces and personal spaces. The focus of this program is to equip employees in attorney general offices to gain knowledge\, become more comfortable with these concepts\, and understand how they may influence office dynamics. \nMoreover\, as attorney general offices struggle with attrition and attracting talent\, the conversation sometimes turns to recognizing diversity\, equity\, and inclusion (DEI) principles as part of an overall human resources\, talent management\, and operational practices strategy. Or\, often\, attorney general staff are simply curious or may want to have conversations and build relationships with their colleagues but are uncomfortable for fear of saying the wrong thing or offending someone unintentionally. An attorney general office’s culture can greatly impact employee success and determine whether it may meet the needs of the community it serves and protects\, as more frequent interaction may be occurring due to demographic shifts and increased contact with people from different backgrounds and cultures. \nFormer and existing attorney general staff will facilitate this discussion-based and interactive workshop to promote an honest discussion with persons who understand an attorney general office’s mandate\, in addition to hearing from experts in the DEI space. This workshop will include varying modes of instruction and discussion\, such as roundtables\, breakouts\, and engaged presentations discussing the aforementioned topics. \nThe training will be hosted in accordance with the latest government mandates and health organization guidance. In accordance with requirements the Government of the District of Columbia has enacted\, NAAG must verify that each participant present has received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. A member of the hotel staff in Washington\, D.C.\, will be checking for proof of vaccination at the entrance to the meeting spaces. NAAG will not collect and keep proof of vaccination. Please share with any nominees that they will be required and must have in their possession their photo ID and proof of vaccination card while onsite. More specific information related to this training will be outlined in an email to attendees in February 2022. \nScholarship Nominations\nNominations will be due by Tuesday\, February 1. \nAnyone working in an attorney general office interested in learning about\, starting a conversation\, or exploring a discussion on diversity\, equity\, and inclusion in the workplace\, generally\, or personally. Participants do not have to be well-versed on the topic. Although some of the materials center around the managerial community\, the concepts are applicable to all attorney general office staff. This workshop is a closed session for attorney general staff only. \nNAGTRI is pleased to offer space for one participant per jurisdiction to attend this training. All office nominators are encouraged to submit up to two nominees\, with a guaranteed acceptance of the first ranked individual. Please contact Cecilia Dakers at cdakers@naag.org if you have any questions. \nContact your nominator: If you are interested in attending this conference\, click the button below and follow the instructions to contact your office’s NAAG Nominator and submit your interest. \nExpress Your Interest \nCLE\nIf eligible\, NAAG will apply for CLE per CLE accrediting body guidelines.
