SUMMARY:2022 NAGTRI Annual Bankruptcy Seminar
DESCRIPTION:November 9 – 10 & 14- 15\, 2022\nVirtual \n\n\nNAGTRI’s Annual Bankruptcy Seminar will be held online on November 9-10 and 14-15 from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. ET each day. The program will build upon the Bankruptcy 101 on-demand video series recorded in 2021 (five 1.5-hour segments) to introduce the basic concepts that bankruptcy novices will need to understand to benefit from this seminar.  This seminar will be presented with the expectation that all attendees have either watched that series or have an equivalent level of knowledge.  Information on how to access the videos will be provided on registration for this seminar. \nAs in prior years\, this seminar will have segments cover all the major aspects of a bankruptcy case such as the automatic stay and discharge\, claims filing\, operations during the case and plan confirmation and many more.  We will also have breakout sessions for regulators and tax counsel to consider their specific issues.  We will look to hit the current “hot and emerging topics” and will hear from experienced government counsel\, private counsel and professors\, and judges who have been handling those new issues.  A preliminary agenda is attached; some topics are still being finalized and the agenda will be updated as that occurs. \nView Draft Agenda\nRegistration is open to the public. If you are a staff counsel in the office of a Member Attorney General and are seeking a scholarship\, please do not register online. Instead\, please click here and follow the steps. \n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\n Category\nRegistration Fee (manual included)\n\n\nAttorneys General of NAAG Member Offices\n Complimentary\n\n\nNAAG Member – Attorney General Staff\n $100\n\n\nOther state counsel\n $150*\n\n\nGeneral admission\n $150\n\n\n\n*Discount of $30 off available for other state counsel if requested here. \n**If you have created your NAAG account and do not see the correct pricing listed\, please make sure you have entered your organization under your profile. The program’s primary goal is to afford participants the opportunity to gain an understanding of and overcome the challenges when enforcing consumer protection laws. The emphasis in both the presentations and skills sessions will be to build upon the knowledge and skills participants have\, take what they learn and apply it in the context of such cases\, and to finish the program with a better understanding of how to effectively and professionally enforce consumer protection laws. \nFaculty-led presentations will cover many topics including the beginnings of a complex case; investigations and pre-litigation discovery; victims and witnesses; common ethical issues in consumer protection matters; pretrial motions; depositions; multistate cases; negotiations; dealing with the defense; calculating civil penalties and other forms of relief; and a real-life case study. There will also be skills sessions regarding pre-trial investigations\, depositions\, negotiations\, and civil penalties/other relief utilizing a case study developed specifically for the training. \nScholarship Nominations\nNominations will be due by Friday\, August 12\, 2022. \nNAGTRI will provide a limited number of scholarships to attorney general staff to attend the training. SUMMARY:NAGTRI Predatory and Unethical Practices in Substance Use Treatment Conference
DESCRIPTION:May 3-4\, 2022\nPhiladelphia\, PA \nSCHOLARSHIP NOMINATIONS EXTENDED: Nominations will be due by Friday\, March 25\, 2022.\nThis hybrid conference will address predatory and unethical substance use treatment schemes found across the United States\, including insurance-related fraud\, patient brokering\, and misleading advertising. This training will also address the substance use treatment landscape\, common types of civil and criminal fraud\, and the lived experiences of persons impacted by these problematic practices. Participants will hear from speakers of various backgrounds that are tackling this issue\, including peers within attorney general offices and local prosecutors\, the legal research community\, medical and public health experts\, and the patient advocacy community. This problem persists across various legal fields including Medicaid and insurance fraud\, consumer protection\, and even human trafficking. \nFor additional information\, please find part one and part two on NAGTRI Online. The first session\, hosted on November 4\, 2021\, addressed foundational concepts regarding substance use disorders\, the treatment landscape\, and relevant policy and legal considerations. Participants also heard from a person with lived experience in navigating substance use treatment for themselves including unethical\, predatory\, and fraudulent practices. The second session\, hosted on January 11\, 2022\, addressed the investigation\, prosecution\, and monitoring of predatory and unethical practices in substance use treatment in greater depth. This training included an overview of how other state agencies may address these issues\, including in collaboration with the attorney general community as well as an account from those with lived experience in substance use treatment on how the treatment landscape may differ for certain communities. \nThese trainings are made possible with support from Arnold Ventures. \nScholarship Nominations\nNominations will be due by Friday\, March 25\, 2022. \nThe conference will take place on Tuesday\, May 3\, 2022 from 9:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. ET and Wednesday\, May 4\, 2022\, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. ET. \nThis training is a closed session open to attorney general staff only. \nNAGTRI is pleased to offer space for additional participants per jurisdiction to attend this seminar. Should a training nominator like to submit more than two nominations\, please email Noah Rubin at nrubin@naag.org. Office nominators are encouraged to submit all interested nominees\, for both in-person and virtual participation. NAGTRI makes every effort to accept all nominees for in-person participation. \nContact your nominator: If you are interested in attending this conference\, click the button below and follow the instructions to contact your office’s NAAG Nominator and submit your interest. \nExpress Your Interest \nVirtual Registration\nAttorney general staff who wish to attend the program virtually can register for free. \nCLE\nIf eligible\, NAAG will apply for CLE per CLE accrediting body guidelines. \nHEALTH & SAFETY\nThis training will be offered as a hybrid event; in-person and virtual participation will both be available as options to members of the attorney general community. For in-person participants\, NAAG will be following the rules and guidelines provided by the hotel and local (and/or other applicable) jurisdiction. However\, NAAG would like for you to determine your personal comfort level and\, therefore please note that throughout the in-person training\, there will be group meals and training activities where participants will need to work closely with their peers. Distancing is possible\, but\, if you feel uncomfortable about being around other attendees during meals and discussions\, it will be challenging for you to engage in the training in-person. Participants may eat in their hotel rooms individually if preferred\, but this would impede your ability to engage closely with other attendees for interactive sessions and discussions. Please take this into account when considering your interest in attending this training in-person\, and we kindly ask that you set your expectations accordingly. Information regarding registration for virtual attendance and participation will be shared at a later date. \nMore specific information related to the COVID protocols in place for this training will be outlined in an email to attendees in advance. In the meantime\, please review the latest guidance from the city of Philadelphia and the state of Pennsylvania.
