Consumer Chief of the Month: Jason Evans, Michigan Attorney General’s Office

portrait of Jason Evans fishingI joined the Michigan Department of Attorney General in 2005, after spending two years in private practice.  Initially, I worked in our Public Employment, Elections & Tort Division, focusing on employment law cases and tort defense work.  This assignment provided me with significant civil litigation experience.  I represented multiple state agencies in state and federal court.

I then moved to the Consumer Protection Division and got my first taste of working on behalf of consumers.  I stayed in the CP Division for about a year before transferring to the Corporate Oversight Division, where I primarily handled banking and insurance matters.

In 2013, I was promoted to be First Assistant of our Health Care Fraud Division.  I stayed in that division until January 2022, when I was promoted to Division Chief of the Corporate Oversight Division (which now houses our consumer protection team).  I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to once again work on consumer protection matters and serve with an excellent team doing great work on behalf of the citizens of Michigan.

In addition to my work at the Attorney General’s office, I have also served as a Judge Advocate in the Michigan Army National Guard since 2008.  From May 2010 to June 2011, I left the AG’s office for a deployment to Afghanistan.  During the summer of 2020, I attended and passed the grueling Military Judge Course at the Army JAG School in beautiful Charlottesville, Virginia.  I was subsequently appointed as Michigan’s first military judge.  I plan to continue in that position until I retire.

Although dual careers can be difficult, the Michigan AG’s office has consistently supported and accommodated my military career.  Both careers have offered me the opportunity to serve my country and state in fulfilling and challenging ways.

Serving in the AG’s office has also allowed me the opportunity to prioritize my family.  I have been married to my wife Tiffany for 22 years (we met while undergrads at Michigan State University) and we have three children, ages 16, 14, and 8.  As a family, we enjoy spending time at our cottage on a lake just south of the Mackinac Bridge – the five-mile-long suspension bridge that connects Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas.  If you ever want to go fishing in northern Michigan (including ice fishing), let me know!

Hope to meet some of you in person at the NAAG National Robocall Summit in Detroit July 12th and 13th.
